General Prep Items
  • Flashlights
    • Waterproof if possible
    • Rechargeable is good (some models will come with an optional tray for traditional batteries)
    • Good rule of thumb is 1 flashlight per adult
  • Glow sticks are a cheap fallback and can be found at various places
Pets
  • Make sure you have carriers for all of your pets
  • Sealable plastic containers for transporting pet food
  • Bowls for water (collapsible bowls come in handy)
  • Toys to keep them comfortable
  • Any important medication they may need
  • Cats
    • Small litter box
    • Small pack(s) of litter
  • Dogs
    • Pee pads if you’ve got a lil pupper
    • Poo bags
Packing A Go-Bag
  • If possible, try to get a waterproof bag
  • If you have a backpack with a bladder, fill the bladder ahead of time
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries (AA are often the most commonly used)
  • Snacks
  • Cash if you have some on hand
  • House and any other important keys you want to keep safe
  • Pet food bowls and food - collapsible bowls are handy
  • Important toiletries
    • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Can opener - because you never know when you might need one
  • Medications
  • Fresh change of clothes
  • Important documents
  • Portable battery-powered radio if you have one
  • Walkie-talkies if you have them on hand, but not required
    • These are good in case cellular service goes down
    • Can be found at most hardware and outdoor stores, or any place that sells hunting and hiking gear
  • Keep insurance docs in a safe place and take them with you if you evacuate
  • Scan them onto your phone and store them as PDFs
  • If applicable, have the app installed for your provider and make sure you’re logged in
  • Share your location with friends and relatives
